Benefits & Outcomes

Repair When Possible

Meniscus repair is chosen when the tear pattern and tissue quality allow it. Dr. Stapleton recommends the approach suited to your tear.

Decisions Based on Your Tear

The type, location, and quality of the tear guide whether repair, partial meniscectomy, or nonsurgical care is recommended.

Recovery Matched to the Procedure

Recovery after repair differs from recovery after meniscectomy. Dr. Stapleton explains what to expect for your procedure, and return to activity is guided by your individual recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a meniscus tear always need surgery?▾

No. Some tears improve with nonsurgical care. Dr. Stapleton evaluates the tear type and location to recommend repair, partial meniscectomy, or nonsurgical treatment.

What is the difference between repair and meniscectomy?▾

Repair preserves the meniscus by stitching the torn tissue. Partial meniscectomy removes the torn portion when the tear cannot be repaired.

Is meniscus surgery outpatient?▾

Meniscus repair and partial meniscectomy are typically same-day outpatient procedures.

Will I need physical therapy?▾

When therapy is part of your plan, it is coordinated through outside physical therapy providers, as on-site physical therapy is not currently offered. Dr. Stapleton monitors your progress at follow-up visits.
